Fried Elliott

Sailor of the Week: October 21-27

“Embracing Today’s Media Platforms to Promote Your Class or Fleet” is the theme for US SAILING’s 2010 One-Design Symposium (ODSS) on November 13-14 at the Balboa Yacht Club in Corona del Mar, Calif. Standout sailing photographer Fried Elliott (Dallas, Texas) will be on hand to deliver a keynote presentation on key marketing communications concepts and the role images can play in promoting your class and events. Fried is also excited to be conducting a hands-on sailing photography workshop. Workshop attendees will participate in three sessions:

•    Composition, techniques, and shooting tips.
•    An actual photo shoot (either onshore or on-the-water)
•    A post-processing show

“This One-Design Symposium is a great environment to meet and exchange ideas with other class officers and volunteers,” explained Fried, who is presenting at ODSS for the fourth time. “The feeling of camaraderie and enthusiasm is infectious.”

Fried got involved in photography in 1994, while looking for something to keep him active and involved in sailing. He learned the fundamentals of composition and exposure by shooting landscape and wildlife photography. Fried took a fellow mentor’s suggestion and tried shooting something he loves, which led him to a local Snipe regatta. “I thought the results were terrible, but the sailors loved the photos so I decided to see if I could get my work to a level I was satisfied with and see where it led me.”

Fried started sailing at the age of 14 with his brother Steve, on a refurbished wood/fiberglass kit boat. Snipes were Fried’s racing class of choice. Fried agrees that sailing is truly a life-long sport. “As a photographer, I’ve probably become even more attuned to this because I watch events more intently for these moments of personal growth.”

Below is a collection of Fried’s favorite photographs he took at this year’s Star Western Hemisphere Championship.
