The BMW ORACLE Racing Team wrapped-up its three-day tour of the East Coast last Thursday with a visit to Newport, R.I., former America’s Cup host for over 50 years. Over 400 youth sailors were on hand to take part in the festivities, catch a glimpse of the Cup, and meet the team. The kids sailed vintage 12-Meters , Opimists, 420s, and more on Newport Harbor during the fleet parade. Later in the afternoon the youth sailors were guests of honor in a special question and answer session with the team and one 8-year-old from the Greenwich Bay Sailing Association (GBSA), out of East Greenwich, R.I., just may have stolen the show.

Ben Rosenberg, a fourth grader from Cedar Hill Elementary School, was ecstatic about the opportunity to meet the team and see the cup in his home state. Ben raised his hand to ask Russell Coutts a question in front of the packed house. “I was kind of nervous at first, but it was really cool to ask the best sailor in the world a question,” said Ben. You can watch this Q&A on the US SAILING Video Player.

Ben was also impressed with the Cup. “I never thought it would be so big and detailed,” he articulated.

“It’s not an everyday occurrence that the Cup comes to town,” said GBSA Program Director and University of Rhode Island Head Coach Joey Mello.” Mello was quick to thank the East Greenwich Yacht Club for their generous donation of boats for the kids to use on Newport Harbor during the big day.

Ben has been making quite the progress at GBSA over the past two years. He engages in both the Opti beginner and green fleet racing programs. “I like taking advantage of the afternoon winds during the green fleet practice,” mentioned Ben.

Ben looks forward to sailing Lasers one day. He also enjoys introducing his friends to the sport. “I took one of my classmates out sailing in our Baltic 37 and now he loves to sail,” Ben proudly said.
