Craig Smith

Sailor of the Week: December 9-15

Craig Smith, of Hatboro, Pa., knows how to promote participation in Thistle class sailing, and he also knows how to be a good sport.

Craig is one of the Thistle Class Association's (TCA) Past Presidents having served as TCA President in 2009. Prior to that, he was first vice president in 2008 and third vice president for growth & promotions from 2005 to 2007. Craig is known as "Mr. Thistle" in his on-going promotion of Thistle sailing and TCA. Craig is willing to go to the extreme to get sailors in a Thistle.
Last year Craig made a bet that if 15 women teams registered for the Thistle Women's National Championship, he would allow them to dye his hair and shave a full mohawk. When the juniors learned of the bet, they asked if they matched the same number as the women, could they dye his new mohawk purple. Craig’s spur of the moment promotional idea was a smashing success. When the women and juniors reached their quota, Craig fulfilled his obligation prior to the Women and Junior Thistle National Championship trophy presentation. The women's teams shaved and bleached his mohawk blonde while the junior's teams dyed it purple.

Craig then spent the rest of the week of Thistle Nationals attempting to perfect a spiked Mohawk to prove that he appreciated the sailors making an effort to put 30 Thistles on the race course.
