Sailor of the Week: March 25 - 31Lynn Walls is the on the water director for the Chicago Yacht Club (CYC). Her responsibilities cover a wide scope of important duties necessary to run successful programs and events. She manages and maintains marine assets, preps and assigns equipment for regattas, and assists with the execution of sailing events. Lynn runs powerboat training courses for the race committee and teaches general education classes for the club membership, including CPR, navigation, and outboard maintenance.
Lynn successfully completed the Smallboat Level 1 Instructor Course in 2001 and has since been instructor certified in Keelboat, Powerboat, Smallboat Level 2 and as a Smallboat Instructor Trainer.
Lynn was recently added to US SAILING’s Training Committee and National Faculty. She attended the National Faculty meeting last fall. Lynn runs US SAILING’s Safe Powerboat Handling and Safety Rescue & Race Support powerboat courses for the race committee. “It was a great experience for me seeing first-hand how all of the training material is put together and how a lot of it is made possible through efforts of volunteers and other professional in the sailing industry,” said Lynn.
She also attended her sixth US SAILING National Sailing Program Symposium (NSPS) last February. “I really enjoyed the seminar topics and content this year and was able to come back with some new ideas and energy for the upcoming season,” stated Lynn.
Lynn grew up in a sailing family. The family boat of choice was a Hunter 27’ and a later a Hunter 28.5’. Her real passion for sailing developed when she raced with her high school team.
“I find that the more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know,” added Lynn. “Every time you go on the water the setting changes just a little bit so there is always an opportunity to learn new things or improve on what you already know.”
