Donna Lange
Sailor of the Week: Jan. 21 - 27
Captain Donna Lange, one of the founders and directors of OceansWatch, is leading the Sail Aid for Haiti project. OceansWatch is coordinating a fleet of sailboats to take food, medical aid, relief supplies and support to Haiti, following the recent earthquake that devastated the country.
This joint effort has 10 boats confirmed in the fleet, including four from OceansWatch, four from the Key West Conch Republic, and two independents. They are preparing to depart February 8 and will take as many supplies and materials as they can carry.
The project’s objective is to deliver these supplies to the remote locations of the island, such as small coastal villages, not easily accessible by the large ships and planes. The mission is to use private sailboats to do so.
Donna visited Haiti last year to set up contacts for OceansWatch projects. This helped provide logistical support for the boats sailing to Haiti for this new mission.
