ANNAPOLIS, Md. (September 27, 2013) – Teams raced into the night on Saturday at the U.S. Offshore Championship, hosted by Naval Academy Sailing Squadron. The regatta's distance race followed a buoy race, as the Navy 44 sloops returned to the base after 8 p.m.
The 1.5 nautical mile buoy race started 6 to 8 knots. Andrew Beeler (Annapolis, Md.) and Navy won the pin and and took a lead. The left side of the course did not pay off for Beeler, as Ryan Hamm (Charleston, S.C.) passed Beeler and went the distance and won by 150 yards. Teams adjusted to a 15 to 20 degee wind shift. Beeler and Norman Dawley gybed after the weather mark and got inside the shift. Dawley was second and Steve Hastings (Corpus Christi, Texas) edged Beeler for third.
Race 4 was the 25 nautical mile distance race that got underway early this evening at approximately 5:15 p.m. Boats in the distance race around buoys and government marks. Dawley won the race and took sole possession of first place by four points over Beeler, who placed ninth in the distance race. Defending champion Bruce Kuryla (Milford, Conn.) finished second and Steve Travis (Mercer Island, Wash.) finished third.
Two to three buoy races are planned for Sunday. Racing begins at 10:00 a.m.
Each team consists of a crew of eight, including one skipper and six crew members, plus one U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman provided from the varsity offshore racing team. A minimum of five of each competitors’ team, including the designated skipper, must have raced together in at least five regattas in AMERICAP/ORR, IMS, IRC, MORC, PHRF, Offshore One Design, Offshore Level Class Racing or Portsmouth Numbers rating systems in the past 18 months. Each team’s skipper must have been the regular helmsman for the five qualifying regattas and must start and sail all windward legs in this regatta. Teams were selected based on US Sailing Area and resume.
