The Junior Big Boat Sailing (JBBS) Program is an opportunity for teens to sail with an instructor or coach on 35 to 45 foot well-outfitted sailboats. The program allows new sailors to learn the ropes on a big boat platform or experienced junior sailors to apply their small boat sailing skills to a new challenge. The program puts the focus on fun and teamwork and is a great addition to any existing Junior Sailing Program.
Free resources are available. These resources include outlines, lesson plans for eight classes, and an exemption from the Coast Guard that give organizations the ability to use a volunteered big boat lent by a club member, owner, or volunteer, provided they receive no compensation. This allows for a current US Sailing Level 1 Instructor without additional certification to teach the program legally without additional licensing. Several organizations are “field testing” the program this year by utilizing the free materials in conjunction with the Basic Keelboat textbook and will be providing feedback on the program, which will be made available to all member clubs in the fall of 2013.
