PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (September 13, 2012) – The first day of racing at the U.S. Women’s Match Racing Championship, hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club, was spirited by typical ideal conditions on San Francisco Bay. The six teams competing this year finished the first round robin stage and the first flight in the second round robin.

Two-time U.S. Women’s Match Racing Champion Genny Tulloch and her crew had a stellar day on the water. Tulloch (San Francisco, Calif.), who is sailing with Margaret Shea (Wilmette, Ill.) and US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider teammates Jennifer Chamberlin (Washington, D.C.) and Stephanie Roble (East Troy, Wis.), went unscathed today. They won all six matches to claim the day’s top performance.

Nicole Breault’s (San Francisco, Calif.) team won five of six matches on Thursday, with their only loss coming against Tulloch. Breault’s crew consists of Evan Brown (San Francisco, Calif.), Casey Williams (Belmont, Mass.), and Julie Servais (San Diego, Calif.). Collectively, they are sailing together as a team for the first time this week.

Day One Championship NotesUSWMRC 12 D1 2

  • Teams were greeted with breezes at 14 knots early in the day with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the high 60s. By the afternoon, breezes built up to 20 knots with gusts reaching 25.
  • The Principal Race Officer this week is Bartz Schneider.
  • Racing begins at 10 am PT on Friday through Sunday.
  • Quote of the Day: Chief Umpire Sandy Grosvenor was excited to be back in San Francisco for this US Sailing National Championship. “It’s a very unique venue because of the impact the current has. The Sailing Instructions have accommodations for an offset leg. This will allow us, depending on the wind angle, to make a true down wind leg.”
  • This US Sailing Championship is a Qualifying Event for the 2012 ISAF Nations Cup Regional Finals.
  • Artemis was out practicing near the course on San Francisco Bay.

Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky
Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky is crafted at Pulteney Distillery in Wick, Scotland. The distillery was founded in 1826 by James Henderson at the height of Wick’s herring boom. The distillery lies in the heart of ‘Pulteneytown’, which was one of the most important and biggest herring fishing ports in Europe.

Old Pulteney Single Malt whisky has a long standing association with the sea and is known as the “Maritime Malt.” Its carefully crafted taste carries the windswept and rugged character of the North, the salty and fresh air of the North Sea, and the distillery’s rich maritime heritage runs through every drop of this fine malt. The award-winning Old Pulteney portfolio includes the World Whisky of the Year title, in Jim Murray’s 2012 Whisky Bible Awards. Visit us at http://www.oldpulteney.com/.
