US Sailing Launches Membership Matters Campaign

Fans to Decide Greatest American Sailor

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (May 15, 2012) – US Sailing, the National Governing Body of the sport, is introducing a Membership Matters campaign to raise awareness about the importance of being a member of US Sailing. The initiative will detail how membership in US Sailing enables the organization to deliver the programs and services essential to all sailors in the U.S. In conjunction to Membership Matters, and to celebrate the rich history of racing in this country, US Sailing will be announcing an exciting, interactive online contest that will give fans the chance to crown the Greatest American Sailor.

An impressive field of 64 American sailors were selected and ranked in a tournament style bracket. Fans will have an opportunity to vote online weekly for winners in each match-up. By participating, you will enter a chance to win the Sailor’s Dream Year Sweepstakes. Details will be announced on the Greatest American Sailor, including field of 64 sailors, and sweepstake prizes on Wednesday, May 30.

Since 1897, sailors from around the country have been positively impacted by US Sailing’s leadership. US Sailing membership dollars support all types of sailors, from beginners to experts, from one-design sailors to offshore cruisers, and from instructor trainers to race officials.

“US Sailing does an amazing job servicing many different sailors with vastly different needs,” said Greg Fisher, World Champion and Director of Sailing at the College of Charleston. “Our sport is extremely diverse and US Sailing helps everyone from Olympians, to beginning Optimist sailors, to one-design classes, to college sailing, to grand prix offshore racers. None of us truly realize all the support they offer everyone who enjoys the sport of sailing. US Sailing is a tremendous resource for all sailors. That is why US Sailing membership matters to me.”

Visit US Sailing Membership Matters at www.ussailing.org/membershipmatters to join US Sailing and find out how your support of the organization through membership touches every sailor. Sailors can also learn more about how US Sailing sets the course for sailors to enjoy the sport for a lifetime and about the many membership types offered.
