US SAILING Launches Upgrades to Velocity Prediction Program for 2011
“Sailing your boat to its potential and optimizing for a given event are two separate processes,” said Dan Nowlan, US SAILING Offshore Director. “The Performance Package provides target boat speeds and wind angles. These are a great tool for maximizing your boat’s speed on the race course. The Race Optimization Package is the next step. It helps you find the fastest boat configuration for a specific event like Bermuda races or Transpac. We are trying to make these services available at an affordable price."
Several world-renown offshore racers, including Rives Potts and Peter Rebovich, have used these VPP derived services to guide their boats to victory in races, such as the Newport to Bermuda Race in recent years.
"US SAILING has collaborated with Chris Bedford’s Sailing Weather Service organization to gain access to their archives of 30 years of world-wide weather and technical expertise. This allows us to model weather patterns for any event in the world," explained Nowlan. "US SAILING now has the capability to optimize your boat’s configuration based historical or expected weather patterns and optimal routing analysis for any of the world’s major events.”
The Performance Package provides custom performance predictions for individual yachts calculating the speed potential of a boat by measuring all influential factors in racing including weather, wind speed, elements of the boat, equipment, and crew.
Check out the Velocity Prediction Program and Race Optimization Package available for purchase on the US SAILING Store.
