LONG BEACH, Calif. (June 12, 2011) - Racing concluded today in San Pedro Bay at the U.S. Youth Multihull Championship hosted by Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach, Calif. Fourteen teams raced Viper F16s in light and shifty breezes this morning. Later in the afternoon, wind speed increased slightly with a hard shift. In the end, it was the team of Taylor Reiss (Panama City, Fla.) and Matthew Whitehead (Panama City, Fla.) who won the Arthur J. Stevens Trophy.
Reiss and Whitehead won four of the the five races completed over two days. They won all three races yesterday and the first race on Sunday. Reiss and Whitehead edged the duo of Jeremy Herrin (Sarasota, Fla.) and Jason D'Agostino (Sarasota, Fla.) who finished just one point behind the leaders. Herrin and D'Agostino posted a pair of bullets and finished second in three races.
"We've had a lot of practice in this boat and felt we were as prepared as we could be," said Reiss. The winning tandem finished seventh in the previous U.S. Youth Multihull Championship in 2009.
Reiss and Whitehead are looking forward to competing in this week's U.S. Multihull Championship, also hosted by the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club on June 15-18. They finished seventh in last year's event. Reiss and Whitehead are also preparing to compete at the ISAF Youth World Championships in Zadar, Croatia on July 7-16.
