POINT RICHMOND, Calif. (June 28, 2011) - Top youth sailors raced in challenging conditions today in Laser Radials on San Francisco Bay at US SAILING’s 2011 U.S. Junior Women’s Singlehanded Championship (USJWSC), hosted by Richmond Yacht Club in Point Richmond, Calif. Rainy conditions were met with flat seas and light winds, which limited Tuesday's racing.
Racing began this morning at 10:45 a.m. PDT with breezes at 7 to 8 knots. Susannah Spoto (Tampa, Fla.) won race one. Hannah Hughes (Seabrook, Texas) finished second and Christina Frost (Nokomis, Fla.) was third. Soon after race one, competition was delayed due to insufficient winds and eventually racing was officially postponed for the day. Sailing conditions are expected to improve for Wednesday's racing.
Two days of clinics for the competing sailors led by US SAILING’s National Junior Coach Frank Ustach and a team of distinguished junior and college sailing coaches took place on Sunday and Monday.

Championship Notes
The U.S. Junior Women’s Singlehanded Championship is an open event… Competitors are between the ages of 13 and 18… A total of ten races are scheduled. Three races must be completed to constitute a complete championship. When fewer than six races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores. When six or more races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score… Racing begins each day at 11 a.m. (subject to change)… Racing will take place on San Francisco Bay in the vicinity of Southampton Shoal… US SAILING Championship medals will be awarded to competitors who finish first through fifth… The C. Thomas Clagett Jr. Sportsmanship Prize will be awarded.
