MANTOLOKING, N.J. (July 12, 2011) - On Tuesday, 40 teams in Club 420s took to the racing course in great sailing conditions on Barnegat Bay for day one of the U.S. Junior Women's Doublehanded Championship, hosted by the Mantoloking Yacht Club (Mantoloking, N.J.) and Bay Head Yacht Club (Bay Head, N.J.).
After four races in heavy northwest winds, averaging 12 to 18 knots, Megan Grapengeter-Rudnick (Darien, Conn.) and crew Caroline Atwood (Killingworth, Conn.) have a three point lead over Lily Katz (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Fiona Walsh (Rye, N.Y.). Grapengeter-Rudnick and Atwood posted finishes of 3-6-3-2 for 14 points. Kats and Walsh finished with a 2-2-4-9 line for 17 points.
Sarah Williams (Bay Head, N.J.) and crew Ali Blumnethal (Bellport, N.Y.) won races two and three to leap into contention. They also finished seventh and 14th in the other two races. Williams and Blumenthal are in third place and nine points behind the leaders.
Racing began this morning at 10:30 a.m. and finished just before 4:00 p.m. Courses were windward leewards. Two races had downwind finishes and two races had an upwind finishes.

Championship Notes
The U.S. Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship is an open event…Competitors are between the ages 13 and 18… A total of 10 races are scheduled. Three races must be completed to constitute a complete championship. When fewer than six races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores. When six or more races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score… Racing begins each day at 10:30 a.m. ET (subject to change)… Racing takes place on Barnegat Bay at the Green Island course… Trophies will be awarded to the skippers and crew finishing in the top three places. US SAILING medals will be presented to the top five finishing teams. The C. Thomas Clagett Sportsmanship Award will be awarded to a team based on the results of the competitors’ secret ballot.
