Former US SAILING Executive Director (1988-94) and retired US Navy Captain, John B. Bonds, Sr. (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.), passed away Tuesday night at the age of 70. He was the founder and a moderator of US SAILING's popular Safety-at-Sea Seminar program. Bonds also served on US SAILING's Board of Directors, Training Committee, and was a senior race officer and certified judge. Before serving as executive director, Bonds was the Director of Navy Sailing at the Naval Academy, where he spearheaded the effort to create the fleet of Navy 44s. Bonds enjoyed sailing J/44s, J/24s, J/35s, and J/40s.
US SAILING President Gary Jobson had this to say about Bonds: "John Bonds has made a substantial contribution to the sport of sailing. He helped many young people in the sport and will be greatly missed by all."
