SAN PEDRO, Calif. (August 3, 2010) – Sailing conditions were fantastic again in the Port of Los Angeles for day two of the U.S. Youth Sailing Championships, hosted by the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club. The standings remain close atop the leaderboard in three-of-the-four fleets, which bodes well for a climactic conclusion to the championship on Wednesday.
Mitchell Kiss (Mascatawa Bay Yacht Club) asserted himself today in the Radial fleet. He won the final two races of the day to take a two-point lead into tomorrow. He led by one after yesterday’s four races. His throwout race is a 10th place finish in race six. Trailing closely is Mateo Vargas (St. Petersburg Yacht Club). He finished third in the final two races of the day to stay within striking distance tomorrow. Both Kiss and Mateo are members of the US Sailing Development Team, along with Christopher Stocke (Sarasota Youth Sailing Program) who is in third place.
The team of Graham Landy (Norfolk Yacht Country Club) and Colin Murphy (Shelter Island Yacht Club) lead by a narrow margin over Chris and Daniel Segerblom (Newport Harbor Yacht Club) through seven races in the 420 fleet. Landy and Murphy’s lead moved from one point yesterday to two after three more races today. The Segerbloms sailed to victory in the final race of the day after posting an eighth place finish in race six. Their throwout is a 16th place finish in race five. Landy and Murphy finished second and third over the final two races, and 10th to start the day, which is currently their throwout result. Chris Segerblom is a USSDT member.
John Wallace (St. Petersburg Yacht Club), another USSDT member, has a commanding lead in the Laser fleet. He is nearly flawless through eight races. Wallace has won seven-of-eight, with a sixth place finish in race six. He is 15 points ahead of Trey Hartman (Lakewood YC / GCYSA), who is in second place. Hartman posted a pair of second place finishes today.
In the 29er fleet, Antoine Screve and James Moody (San Francisco Yacht Club) have taken a four point lead after winning two of the last three races of the day. They lead Sterling and Hans Henken (Coronado Yacht Club) who moved into second place with consistent racing today. However, their throwout race is a 12th place finish in race one yesterday. Monday’s leaders Mac Agnese (Lauderdale Yacht Club) and Alek Nilsen (St. Francis Yacht Club) dropped back to third place, despite winning four of the first six races of the regatta. Their throwout is a 13th place finish in race nine. They are 10 points behind the leaders. Screve, Moody, Agnese, and Nilsen are all USSDT members.
The sailing conditions were similar to Monday. Wind speed ranged from 11 to 16 knots. Flat to small choppy water on the inside course and larger waves with choppier conditions on the outside course. Wednesday’s final day of racing gets underway on Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. PST.
