2010 USMRC_262DETROIT, Mich. (September 17, 2010) – The ten teams competing at this year’s U.S. Match Racing Championship had a full day of racing on Friday despite consistent light winds. Six more flights were completed with three flights to go in the round robin stage before the semifinalists are determined.

Taylor Canfield (St. Thomas Yacht Club), an Intercollegiate Sailing Association All-American, surged into contention by going 3-0 today and 5-1 overall. He had wins over John Pearce (Ithaca Yacht Club), Brad Funk (Lauderdale Yacht Club), and three-time champion Dave Perry (Pequot Yacht Club). Perry went 3-2 today with wins over Funk, Pearce, and Leonid Vasiliev (Oakcliff Sailing Center). He dropped races to Canfield and Mark Johnson (Neenah Nodaway Yacht Club) in a surprising nail-biter. Perry is the only competitor to finish the round robin stage, and he did so with a 7-2 record. Mike Buckley (Hyannis Yacht Club) and Shawn Bennett (St. Francis Yacht Club) are both 4-2.

Perry leads the field and Canfield is in second place. Buckley and Bennett are in a tie for third, and have yet to race against each other in the round robin. They are scheduled to race in flight 15 tomorrow. The top four teams advance to the semifinals.

The battle for this year’s Prince of Wales Bowl continues tomorrow with the conclusion of the round robin stage and the start of the semifinals if wind and weather cooperates. Racing is tentatively scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. The championship wraps-up this Sunday.
