PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (April 22, 2009) - The University of California – Davis and SUNY Maritime College have partnered with US SAILING, the national governing body for the sport, in offering the nation’s premier sailing education experience to their students.

Like their peers at dozens of US SAILING schools across the United States, instructors at these institutions must undergo a rigorous certification training program to deliver curricula created by US SAILING’s National Faculty. This panel draws on the most experienced sailors, educators and sailing experts in the country to constantly develop and update US SAILING’s training materials that set the standard for sailing education excellence in the United States.

“SUNY Maritime College is proud to join the top sailing schools in the country as a US SAILING accredited facility. As the oldest and largest Maritime College in the country we respect US SAILING’s high standards, emphasis on safety, and support of sailing from junior and community programs to top Olympic athletes,” says Rob Crafa, director of waterfront programs at SUNY Maritime College. “We look forward to offering Maritime students the highest level of sail training available while sharing the love of the sport with the entire community.”

"US SAILING has high standards and is recognized all over the world,” says Jim Lathe, sailing director at UC - Davis. “Our school sails in the San Francisco Bay with very demanding conditions, and US SAILING’s emphasis on achievement, competency, and safety ensures that our students are well prepared for those conditions."

“Graduates of US SAILING schools are confident with boats and can convey that confidence to passengers and family members who can feel safe in the hands of US SAILING certified sailors,” says Hart Kelley of US SAILING. “We are pleased to welcome UC – Davis and SUNY Maritime into our network of schools.”

Affiliation with US SAILING also offers a connection to US SAILING’s long history of expertise in the sport of sailing and introduces students to a host membership benefit opportunities.
