PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (September 22, 2009) – The New York Yacht Club (NYYC) has made winning the U.S. Team Racing Championship a proud tradition. NYYC Silver Panda plans on adding to their legacy this week when they take aim at an unprecedented fourth consecutive U.S. Team Racing Championship title and fifth overall on Sept. 25-27. However, they will be tested by a stacked field of experienced teams and sailors from around the country. The field includes eight US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) members, five former ICSA College Sailors of the Year, and three former ICSA Quantum Women Sailors of the Year.
A total of 16 teams, sailing in Vanguard 15s with a three-boat / six-sailor team format, will vie for US SAILING’s George R. Hinman Trophy in Sippican Harbor for three days of racing. The championship is hosted by the Beverly Yacht Club (Marion, Mass.) and sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A., LaserPerformance, Dry Creek Vineyard, Sail Proud, and Kattack. This event attracts the best team racers in the country, with competitors selected based on their team resumes.
Silver Panda owns four of the six U.S. Team Racing Championships won by the NYYC since 1999. Three newcomers join the Silver Panda team to make a run at this year’s title. Joining Colin Merrick (Portsmouth, R.I.), Amanda Callahan (Canton, Mass.) and Peter Levesque (Tiverton, R.I.) will be Carrie Amarante (Wayne, N.J.), who will sail with Levesque, former USSTAG member Tim Wadlow (Beverly, Mass.) and Ery Largay (Beverly, Mass.). Silver Panda’s team racing resume runs deep. They won the 2009 and 2007 ISAF Team Racing World Championship.
Last year’s third place team, the Tannery Loungers, hopes to take another shot at the U.S. Team Racing Championship after losing in the semi-finals last year to NYYC Silver Panda. The Tannery Loungers return with five of their six sailors from the 2008 event including John Storck (Huntington, N.Y.), Kaity Storck (Huntington, N.Y.), Erik Storck (Huntington, N.Y.), Lyndsey Gibbons-Neff (Rosemont, Pa.), and Charles Enright (Bristol, R.I.). Caroline Hall-Levesque (Tiverton, R.I.) joins Tannery Loungers, and will race with Enright.
Larchmont returns with all six sailors who competed in the 2008 U.S. Team Racing Championship. Danny Pletsch (Greenwich, Conn.) is also a member of the Larchmont Yacht Club team that finished second at the 2009 Wilson Trophy in West Kirby, England this spring.
Another team of interest is One Man Wolfpack, who features three former College Sailors of the Year including Charlie Buckingham (Newport Beach, Calif.), Adrienne Patterson (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) and Jane Macky (New York, N.Y.).
Among the USSTAG members competing are – Andrew Campbell (Washington, D.C. / Team SDYC), Adam Roberts (San Diego, Calif. / Team SDYC), Nick Martin (San Diego, Calif. / Team SDYC), Clay Johnson (Toms River, N.J. / Tall Boyz), Stuart McNay (Chestnut Hill, Mass. / Team Extreme), Trevor Moore (N. Pomfret, Vt. / STHED), Erik Storck and Charlie Buckingham.
